Why Is My Fireplace Smoking?
Fireplaces can smoke for several reasons, so finding the source of the issue is imperative before trying to dive into a resolution. Explore the following options if a smoky living space has become your new norm.
- Poor chimney draft and airflow. If the chimney doesn’t draw air properly, smoke can back up into the room. Ensure your damper is open first, and if it is, call in a chimney sweep to do an inspection. The solution may be simple, like booking a sweeping, or more complex, like adjusting your chimney’s height.
- Your chimney is too cold. A cold chimney can create a reverse draft until it warms up. Before lighting a fire, preheat the chimney by burning a small roll of newspaper near the damper before lighting the fire. This allows the air to reverse before your flames really get going.
- You’re using the wrong fuel. Unseasoned wood produces more smoke. Use only seasoned, dry firewood with low moisture content for your fires, avoiding wet wood, treated wood, paper products, and any types of plastic.
- Your home is too tight. If you have a newer home that’s insulated a little too well, the insufficient room ventilation can affect how well (or not) the fireplace draws air. Crack open a window or door in the room to invite in some makeup air. Then, ask about longer term solutions, like installing an air supply vent.
